What Parents Should Know Before Using a Cot Mobile

Children need all the love and attention we parents can give. However, with work and other activities, it’s not always possible for parents to be around their little ones all the time. This is where cot mobiles come in handy. They give parents some time to do other things while still providing their child with some form of entertainment. The following are some things parents should know before using a cot mobile for their child.

Remove at Sign of Activity

As the baby grows, they begin to sit upright and look at the surroundings. This usually occurs at the age of 5-6 months. It is at this stage that the baby may attempt to stretch out and grasp the cot mobile. This can be risky as the long strings or cords can cause strangulation, or the detachable parts can cause choking. There is also the possibility of the entire cot mobile falling on the baby and harming them. It is therefore safe to remove the cot mobile at this stage as the baby becomes active.

Secure installation

The installation of your cot mobile is essential to ensure that your baby is secure. Always ensure that your cot mobile is installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Additionally, check that all screws are secure, that there are no broken parts, and that there are no sharp wires or protrusions before each use. It is also essential  to check your cot arm or ceiling attachment periodically since it may loosen with time.

Positioning

The positioning of the cot mobile is important. For infants, it should be placed 10 inches from their faces. This is because infants see best at 8-12 inches when lying down. For older infants who can stretch their arms, it should be hung at least 16 inches from their mattress. The mobile should not be hung above their head. Instead, it should be hung above their chest so that your baby can enjoy the mobile without straining their neck.

Prevent Overstimulation

While the cot mobiles are designed to provide entertainment, some may contain bright lights, loud music, and moving objects, all of which may overstimulate your child. It is important to pre- check the sound and movement of the mobiles. Some babies may overreact to such overstimulating mobiles, thus affecting their sleep patterns. It is important to select a mobile with soft movements and sounds.
